2008 Round2, Suzuki BMX Masters

Round2 of the Flatland World Circuit, the BMX Masters in Cologne, Germany took place on July 4th and 5th. As usual it was held in a big party tent on painted OSB wood surface. Never the best surface to ride on, because it is spongy, it was certainly not the worst either.

The venue of Suzuki BMX Masters

The Masters organizers tried to make Flatland look even better in the media by building a round fence around the riding area. It was a nice idea for pictures, but it also minimized the riding area for practice and not everyone was happy about that.

Terry Adams, USA

Among the 43 pro riders trying to qualify for the finals, the top ten finishers of the Voodoo Jam were present, too. Would the Japanese Voodoo winner Ucchie be able to repeat his back wheel magic and win again? Would US boy Matt Wilhelm be able to one up his second place finish with his precision spinning? Or would the new comer of 2008, Dominik Nekolny from the Chech Republic jump his front wheel switches to victory? Well, all three of them made the 14 rider final, but none of them was to be in the top three this weekend.

Youhei "Ucchi" Uchino, Japan

As opposed to Voodoo Jam, the Masters were not held in a battle style format, but each rider had one run only of 2 and ½ minutes to show their skills. Terry Adams made the most of his chance, entertaining everyone with his big tricks as well as his facial expressions, earning him 3rd. Hungary’s hot shot Adam Kun had a great run, pulling many original tricks and switches to prove he is worth second place in a tough final. The win went to a joung rider from England who handled the pressure of qualifying in first place and stayed up there. Sam Foakes not only took first place in Cologne, but also took the lead in the ranking for 2008, just ahead of Ucchie.

Sam Fokes, England

The BFWC and KOG Finals in Tokyo in October will be very exciting and will also determine the winner of the 2008 BMX Flatland World Circuit. Be there to witness some Flatland insanity!

The kick off of 2008 BMX Flatland world circuit Round1, Voodoo jam took place at the Generation Hall, New Orleans USA on May 31st.
Among enthusiastic audiences filled up the building, 20 riders from Czech Republic , France, Japan, England and USA battled for the honor of world best rider.

Youhei Uchino

After 7 tough battles in the final tournament, the 2 survivors for the grand final were, Youhei "Ucchie" Uchino all the way from Japan, Tokyo and Matt Wilhelm Chicago, USA. Ucchie showed fluent rear tricks clean and Matt against Ucchie with his patented super fast spinning, G- turn moves. The result was Ucchie's first victory of an international contest and bid for the 2008 World championship.

24 years BMX sports in the Cologne Youthpark

In 1984 the first BMX race took place in the Cologne Jugendpark. The
track was built with some wooden obstacles by a youth group. This was
the starting point of a long relationship between the location and
this kind of sport. since then a minimum of one event has been
organised every year.

Justin Miller

The youth centre ‘Cologne Jugendpark’ played a very important role in
the development of BMX freestyle sports in Germany. It was one of the
first locations, which offered permanent and free practise facilities
for BMX riders. After several important and successful contests and
masterships, this year is the 24th anniversary of BMX in the Cologne
Jugendpark.

After German freestyle masterships in 1987, 1989, 1992
there was the first world championship in 1996. 2000 and 2002 the BMX
Worlds was again organised in Cologne in cooperation with the
Jugendpark. Nearly 15,000 spectators and 600 riders from 20 nations
joined the Worlds in 2002. With the Suzuki BMXWorlds 2004, organized
by the agency spielbetrieb, it was the 5th time that this important
event took place in Cologne (therefrom four times in the Jugendpark).
This event was a total success. Over 550 international top riders from
27 countries entertained an audience of about 22,000.

In 2005, spielbetrieb decided to launch the „Suzuki BMXMasters“ as an
independent and yearly happening event which considers the wishes of
the riders and the integration of the over the years growed number of
spectators. The feedback of the riders, visitors but also from our
partners and sponsors was without exception positive. Around 300
international top riders from more than 21 nations as well as 12,000
spectators joined from July 23 to 26 a relaxed and all around
successful event by blistering heat in the Cologne youthpark. At the
second Suzuki BMXMasters 440 international top riders from 30 nations
started in Cologne and enthused around 12,000 spectators.
In 2007, the third Suzuki BMXMasters will take place ...
We are proud to announce that on August 4 and 5 flatland riders from all four corners of the world will get together once again for the annual flatground contest. We would like everyone, from amateur to professional, to experience Flatground to the fullest. Have a look at what we have lined up for you!

BMX Flatland World Circuit
This year Flatground will be the last stop of the BMX Flatland World Circuit with previous rounds in Tokyo and New Orleans. Current leader of the World Circuit is Shintaro Misawa from Japan. Lets see if he can handle the pressure and take home the title.

Location
This years Flatground will take place again in the former ships warf: the NDSM warf in Amsterdam North. The venue is perfectly reachable from Amsterdam Central Station with a free ferryboat and easy to find by car. Enough parking place is available as well. Have a look at www.ndsm.nl for more information.

We bring the wood!
Once again, Flatground will be held on the well-known OSB wooden floor that we introduced to the world of flatland 5 years ago and has since become the standard worldwide. A separate contest and practice floor will be available in the same venue, right next to each other.

Contest.
Flatground will offer a high quality contest for professionals as well as for experts and masters. Registration fee is 25 euros for the expert and master class and 50 euros for the pro class. This price will include entrance to the venue on Saturday and Sunday. Prize money for the pro class is 2500 euros for now. Our main sponsors provide prizes for the expert and master class.

Where can I park my bike?
We will have a secured place available at the venue for everyone to park his or her bike.

Flatground online.
On Monday July 9, the Flatground website will go online. This is where you will be able to register for the contest, find route descriptions, buy tickets on presale, arrange your stay in Amsterdam, become friends with Flatground on Myspace and stay informed on the latest info.
Matthias Dandois wins Voodoo Jam 2007
After an incredible final battle between Matthias Dandois from France and Terry Adams from the USA it was Matthias who deserved the win of the third edition of the Voodoo Jam in New Orleans.

The french young gun, Matthias

This only 18 years old guy from France ripped it up during the whole weekend; he is certainly one of the most inspiring riders from the next generation flatlanders, pushing the sport in the right direction.

Matt in zone

Further highlights were Raphael Chiquet’s amazing back wheel stuff, all performed in short pink pants, Shintaro Misawa his fresh style and Hiroya Morizaki who was pulling some of the most insane links during practice. Voodoo Jam 2007 was the celebration of the BMX flatland lifestyle as promised, with outstanding riding in amateur and pro plus one of the best vibes ever.

Big shout out to Scott Obrien and Terry Adams for making it happen! For those who missed out make sure to visit Voodoo Jam 2008.
